Trying Different Ways to Add a Hook to a Top-Hung Sliding Door

Published:

My room has what I think is a top-hung sliding door (?) that partitions the space, and I thought it would be convenient if I could attach hooks to it, so I tried a few different things.

The Trap with Top-Hung Sliding Doors

I assume other doors with this structure are similar, but with a top-hung type, there is hanging hardware attached to the top edge of the door. Because of that, the common type of hook that hangs over a door physically would not fit. (You cannot slide it in from the side.) Of course, I think I could install one if I used tools to physically remove the door, but since this is a rental, I really did not want to go that far.

Trying Aiwa’s Rail DE Heyaboshi

The first thing I bought was Aiwa’s Rail DE Heyaboshi. I thought it might be possible to insert it without hitting the rail’s hanging hardware because the part that inserts into the rail is split into two prongs.

I tried installing it for real. As expected, I was able to insert it without interfering with the hanging hardware, but even at this point it already felt pretty unstable…

Then, when I hung a bag on it, the center of gravity shifted too far outward and it came off the door. This was not really usable.

Trying the KONTEC AP-01 Dokodemo Pittari Hook

The next thing I tried was the KONTEC AP-01 Dokodemo Pittari Hook. It was the type of product where you insert it into the top of the door and then bend it yourself.

I bought it thinking, “This should work on any door!” and when I tried it, it was really good.

So far, I have been able to use it without any problems even with a fairly heavy bag hanging from it. Convenient!

That said, if you use it as-is, the hook position is a little high. I thought it might be even easier to use if I added two hooks and extended it with something like a “hanger that extends downward.” (I will add an update if I try that later.)

Final Thoughts

Top-hung sliding doors have this trap where ordinary door hangers cannot be inserted, but a thin bendable hook like the KONTEC AP-01 Dokodemo Pittari Hook worked for me. I hope this helps anyone dealing with the same kind of structure.
